Here's a piece I recently finished. The picture below is the environment in its initial stage of design. I had initially wanted there to be a contrast between the extreme elegance of the church and the surrounding town so I went with medieval houses. But instead of creating an interesting new design it felt as if it was simply two different towns bashed together. So I scrapped it and went for more of a Baroque architecture feel to the town with the church drawing its influences from Gothic architecture. This made more sense historically and also in my opinion looked better.
In the future, however, I'd like to play more with combining contrasting themes to create a new design. You see stuff like this a lot in movies like Star Wars where they combine historical architecture with futuristic technology. The planet Naboo, for example seems to take much of its influence from Byzantine architecture. This is most apparent in a comparison of Naboo's palace with the Hagia Sophia of Istanbul, Turkey.
The result is a new elegant design that seems fresh but believable. Improvement is needed on my part to create this effect.
More stuff coming real soon, stick around!
